Circe is a wheel-thrown, stoneware ceramic vase by Abigail Schama. Her form is reminiscent of a vessel in which her namesake—known for her powerful femininity and capricious temperament—may have kept one of her lethal potions. She is brushed with a chalky-white glaze is brushed against her dark clay body. The narrow rim is edged with gold lustre. She is suitable as a decorative piece or to hold flowers.
The making of...
Each piece is the result of an intimate wrangle with the artist on the wheel. Abigail Schama works with a palette of transparent glazes and 24-carat gold lustre layered over a darker clay body. She marks the exterior and interior surfaces, creating a rugged, human tactility and imbuing each vessel with its own inner life. Each pieces' form and contours play on the edges of functionality; no two pieces are alike.
