Persephone is a wheel-thrown, stoneware ceramic bowl by Abigail Schama. She is painted with a transparent white glaze over an earthen clay body, and touched lightly with gold lustre. In Greek mythology, Spring and Summer arrive when Persephone returns from the underworld to grace the earth with bounty. The play of gold against the sparser surface speaks to the abundance to come upon her arrival. She is suitable as a decorative piece or to hold fruit. All glazes are food safe.
The making of...
Each piece is the result of an intimate wrangle with the artist on the wheel. Abigail Schama works with a palette of transparent glazes and 24-carat gold lustre layered over a darker clay body. She marks the exterior and interior surfaces, creating a rugged, human tactility and imbuing each vessel with its own inner life. Each pieces' form and contours play on the edges of functionality; no two pieces are alike.
