Janus is a one-of-a-kind, stoneware ceramic double bowl, made on a creative whim by Abigail Schama. He is painted with a warm transparent glaze and tinged with gold. The duality of the nested bowls reflects the nature of his namesake, the Roman god Janus, who presided over beginnings and transitions, and nod to how Janus is often depicted with two faces—one looking to the past and the other to the future. He is suitable as a display piece or to hold fruit. All glazes are food safe.
The making of...
Each piece is the result of an intimate wrangle with the artist on the wheel. Abigail Schama works with a palette of transparent glazes and 24-carat gold lustre layered over a darker clay body. She marks the exterior and interior surfaces, creating a rugged, human tactility and imbuing each vessel with its own inner life. Each pieces' form and contours play on the edges of functionality; no two pieces are alike.
