Calypso is a wheel-thrown, stoneware ceramic bottle by Abigail Schama. Her namesake sought to hide Odysseus away on her island: she is painted with a thick chalky-white glaze that conceals most of the dark clay's color. Her opening is narrow and reveals little of the space within. She is suitable as a decorative piece or to hold flowers.
The making of...
Each piece is the result of an intimate wrangle with the artist on the wheel. Abigail Schama works with a palette of transparent glazes and 24-carat gold lustre layered over a darker clay body. She marks the exterior and interior surfaces, creating a rugged, human tactility and imbuing each vessel with its own inner life. Each pieces' form and contours play on the edges of functionality; no two pieces are alike.
